Our Government experience
Energy Policy WA: WEM Effectiveness Review
Energy Policy WA (EPWA) provides policy advice to the Coordinator of Energy and government to facilitate the delivery of secure, reliable, sustainable and affordable energy services to Western Australians.
Rennie was engaged to support EPWA with the preparation of the triennial review of the effectiveness of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) in meeting the State Electricity Objective, culminating in a report that must be provided from the Coordinator of Energy to the WA Energy Minister. The scope of the review, which is set out in the Electricity System and Market Rules (ESMR), includes analysis on the functioning of the market and the effectiveness of certain functions performed by central market bodies.
Transmission Connection Process Review
The client plays a critical role by managing and overseeing electricity and gas systems and markets across Australia. This includes operational, planning, and development responsibilities across the National Electricity Market (NEM), the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) in Western Australia, and the Victorian gas transmission network. The client is also responsible for overseeing electricity transmission network connection applications in Victoria.
To ensure consistency, transparency, and efficiency, the client initiated a review of the Victorian transmission connection process. The goal was to benchmark it against connection practices in the rest of the NEM and identify any inefficiencies or improvement opportunities.
Energy Consumers Australia (ECA): CER in grid services and load management
Energy Consumers Australia (ECA) is an independent organisation created by the Council of Energy Ministers to independently advocate on behalf of energy consumers through evidence-based advice.
ECA engaged Rennie to undertake national and international research on market settings that would enable consumers to receive fair value for the services they can provide in the National Electricity Market (NEM) using consumer energy resources (CER). ECA intended to use this work to inform its engagement with the NEM wholesale market settings review.
