The challenge
Gas ecosystem mapping
A participant in Queensland’s energy market engaged Rennie to support in mapping the gas ecosystem value chain as applicable to their operations, to progress the strategy and feasibility of the provision of gas as a feedstock to support a portfolio of generation assets, and associated engineering, operational, business services for gas-powered baseload power generation.
Our solution
Supporting a threshold decision on the feasibility of gas
Rennie conducted both desktop research and stakeholder consultation in order to gather relevant information and map the gas ecosystem value chain across the key scope areas agreed with the client.
The scope of this engagement was to support the client with preparing a summary report that includes the following key components of the gas ecosystem:
- Overview of the ecosystem
- Upstream ecosystem, including major producers and major explorers including storage facilities, reserves and holdings where available
- The Queensland wholesale transmission ecosystem, setting out transmission pipeline operators, owners, assets, areas of operation, and capacity for normal and exceptional operating boundaries.
- The wholesale/C&I retailing ecosystem, setting out at a high level those retailers that sell gas, and market penetration
- The gas engine ecosystem, setting out the main Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) engaged in the Asia Pacific region which the client would likely procure from
- A current perspective setting out the existing and prospective gas generation installations around Australia, by location, wattage (MW) capacity, and owner.
- The main financiers of the assets on the ground as well as any known counterparties that would want to invest or finance gas assets and other infrastructure investors who are and are not able to invest in gas assets based on mandates.
Rennie worked collaboratively with the client, sharing findings and incorporating recommendations for further exploration throughout the drafting process. This culminated in the socialisation of the summary report with key client stakeholders across the broader organisation, allowing for collaborative sessions to discuss the outcomes and industry dynamics identified in the ecosystem mapping.
Our impact
The outputs of this piece of work were utilised to progress the strategy and feasibility of the provision of gas as a feedstock to support a portfolio of generation assets, and associated engineering, operational, business services for gas-powered baseload power generation.
The outputs from this engagement produced a comprehensive report on the gas ecosystem for the client, to help inform its assessment of feasibility for gas as a feedstock to support its portfolio of generation assets. The detailed mapping of the ecosystem allowed for a threshold assessment of the potential opportunity and feasibility, as well as key players participating in, and market dynamics being faced in the gas industry.
Key insights
- Summary report of the gas ecosystem value chain for platforming consideration by the client
- Socialisation of summary report with key client stakeholders
- Desktop research findings summary document
